Lead in Lipsticks and What You Can Do About it

It's widely known that cosmetics contain a great deal of chemicals, toxic, dangerous and even deadly. Though the chemicals are in a small non-lethal dose when used just once, no one knows what the long term effect is on people's health with constant use in one's lifetime.
One thing is for sure; the chemicals get absorbed in the human's body and many of those chemicals have been linked to cancers, birth defects, infertility, allergies, and you name it.
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a non profit group of women, did a test on a variety of lipsticks and found that many of them have a very high concentration of lead. Lead is a very toxic metal that will kill you if consumed in a high dose. We have witnessed or heard about many children's deaths from lead in toys. Let's hope the lead in lipstick won't turn into another catastrophe.
When lipstick and lip gloss are applied on the lips, they don't simply stay on the lips. Their ingredients get absorbed into the body and they can also get into the mouth and into the bloodstream. How much of that lead actually gets into the bloodstream is everyone's guess.
However, Dr. Mark Mitchell, president of the Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice stated: "Lead builds up in the body over time and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant exposure levels. The latest studies show there is no safe level of lead exposure."
So, what can you do about it?

There are really only three options and an alternative decision.
Option 1: e-mail or call the parent company of the lipstick that you're using and ask them to tell you if your lipstick has lead. If so, how much lead does it have. However, don't be surprised if they express unwillingness to disclose this information to you. Corporations like to hide the substances in their products under the claim of "company trade secrets".
One may wonder how come the companies producing organic and mineral cosmetics are not afraid to disclose the ingredients in their products.
The government doesn't have any regulations for lead in lipsticks, but as a reference, by law, the allowed safe level of lead in candy is 0.1 parts per million (ppm). And some more popular lipsticks have shown to have up to 6 times that amount.
Option 2: simply switch over to organic lipstick so you're no longer exposed to lead and all the other deadly chemicals present in lipsticks nowadays. The Alternative Decision would be to educate yourself about the toxic chemicals in the cosmetics and what these chemicals can do to your health so you can make better decision next time you buy another lipstick.
